The Happy Banana

The Happy Banana

Optima Community Association is making it easier for its older residents to eat healthily by launching a low cost grocery service.

Called The Happy Banana, the service is aimed at over 50s living in Optima’s Attwood Green estate whose low income and mobility problems make it difficult for them to eat the recommended five portions of fruit and vegetables a day.

Working with a local catering company to offer three different pack options, Optima has been able to price packs of fruit, veg and salad at £3 each which can mean savings of up to £4 if customers buy through Optima rather than at one of the local supermarkets.

Optima’s James Hobbs, who is co-ordinating the initiative said: “Research has shown that elderly people living in urban areas are not eating a healthy diet which is vital to ensuring good health and maintaining their independence. Another barrier to eating well is the rise in food prices which means people are tempted to cut fruit and veg from their diet. This project is about delivering good quality and affordable fresh produce to those who might otherwise miss out.”

Happy Banana customers can chose from packs of seasonal fresh fruit, vegetables or salad which are then delivered to Optima once a week. Those who can’t pick up their groceries from the housing association will have them delivered to their door for free.
