Community Pride Week

Community Pride Week

Central TV presenter, Arti Halai, hosted Optima's annual community award ceremony during Community Pride Week in Attwood Green.

The presenter handed out awards to the winners of the annual Garden Competition and to winners of the Making a Difference scheme which aims to recognise those who have made an outstanding contribution to their community or who have been good neighbours.

In the Garden Competition, joint winners in the category of the best large garden were Sid Jacques and Clayton Moseley, both of Lee Bank. Sid's garden was described as a great example of a cottage style garden while Clayton was praised for his creative flair.

Joint winners of the best small garden/balcony category were George Hawkes of Benmore and Jo Elson from Lee Bank. The judges were particularly impressed by their enthusiasm and ability to make the most of a small space.

The ceremony was the culmination of Community Pride week, a series of events designed to encourage residents and community organisations to do their bit to improve the area.

In the Making a Difference Awards, the judges were looking to honour people who volunteer in their community.

In the category for under 18s, the winners were Brogan and Ciara Byrne, and Paige Dobson, who volunteer at a number of play projects in the area.

The winner of the Good Neighbour of the Year award went to Maria Dhinn of Woodview. Despite personal difficulties she is a dedicated and enthusiastic worker for others. The runner up in this category was Joan Chapman.

Outstanding Contribution to the Community was awarded to Tina O'Dell from Lee Ban. Tina volunteers her time to work with children at a number of play projects. Her enthusiasm, creativity and commitment are the qualities that the judges particularly admired.
